Developing A Computer Media Backup Plan in Ireland

What would you do if you turned on your computer some morning and you got the message "System disk unreadable, unable to boot", or worse yet, there is an empty place where your computer used to be? One of the first questions you will be asked is "Do you have a backup?"

Backups are probably the most essential component of any corporate network, but are also one of those things that are done wrong with dreadful regularity. Yet it's not difficult to get your backup strategy right - all it takes is some thought and a healthy dose of ongoing motivation.  To help, we’ve outlined some important areas to consider:

3 Key Points to a Successful back up plan:

1.    Back up every day and perform a full back up at least once a week.

A good back up plan will include both daily and weekly backups. Daily back ups are undertaken to save data that frequently changes such as contact lists and databases. A weekly back up should save all your data directories.

Some companies take an extra precaution and undertake Monthly backups of the entire contents of your hard drive, including system files, preferences and programs also. Before you decide to do this, consider the amount of time it would take to restore your system from the original distribution disks and their availability.

2.    Test your backup process and your ability to restore at least monthly or quarterly.

Firstly always, always, verify your storage media. At the very least implement a process of checking every nth backup to make sure the data really is there. Secondly every month or quarter test that your back up process really works. You really don't want to find if your server dies next week that the latest valid backup you have is from March 1998.

3.     Store one copy of your full back up off site for security.

Storing removable media off-site is at the core of any back up plan. What will you do if your offices are destroyed because of fire, flooding or even terrorism and your back up tapes/cds were in the office? By storing back up files off-site your recovery time will be significantly reduced.

Backup seems boring, costly and time consuming; but like buying insurance, you risk jeopardizing your entire business if you do not purchase it. Can you afford to be out of business for a week or two or even a day or two? The productivity losses caused by catastrophic system failure and the lack of a good backup system cannot be underestimated. Literally, you cannot afford not to have a computer media back up plan. So what are you waiting for, get planning!!!
